In the olden days, the groundfloor of Casa do Armeiro was the gunsmith shop which gives the name to the house as the “Armourer House“, in English.

The broad walls that used to protect the workshop still exist, build with rocks, stones and ‘taipa”, were the storage room for dangerous supplies, like gunpowder, to make cartridges.

Today, this floor is composed of a suite with a double bed and a large living room with and a small kitchen perfect to repair a simple meal. It also has a sofa bed to accommodate two more guests.

go gastronomy

Mértola was for centuries one of the poorest provinces in Portugal, which led its people to turn the gastronomy of the region to its maximum exponent of creativity. Simple ingredients were turned in unique flavours that kept the taste of homemade meals until today.

Following this legacy, the wine production in Mértola has historical roots as well, as evidenced by the various archaeological finds around here.
